In the current rapidly changing work environment, the tasks performed by a manager of an organization are increasingly becoming important. Even though the kind of business the organization undertakes determines their managerial duties and responsibilities, the functions of managers are similar in making sure that the organizations realize their set goals. It is the role of managers to help the workers in the direction of common objectives and evaluate all of the different purposes to keep them as stable as possible. Manages labor relentlessly and handles different issues all through the day. This essay analyzes their four main roles in an organization.
First, managers assist in planning; that is, they map out the criteria to use in realizing the objectives of an organization (Karger, 1991). For instance, if a company has an objective of increasing its sales, the manager first establishes the steps that are important in realizing that objective. These steps may consist of improving the quality of adverts and re-training the sales team. Thereafter, the manager develops these important steps into a plan, which he or she follows to increase the sales of the company.
It is important to note that the success of a manager depends on the efficiency of the planning procedure. This is because this process foresees future problems and decides on the ways of trouncing over the difficulties. Therefore, planning is a valuable tool in effective management as it facilitates control of the activities of the organization.
The second role of managers is to assist in organizing. In order to attain the goals drawn in the planning procedure, organizing the activities of the company is important. Organization involves appointing people to perform duties that blend to achieve the objectives that are realized in conformity with the organization’s values and procedures. It is necessary for a manager to know the people he or she is working with (Morden, 2004). This is important in organizing into productive teams the most important asset the organization has, its workers. Management staffing, through recruiting, selecting, training, and developing the workers of the company, enables a manager to achieve this.
Next, in order to realize the objectives of an organization, a manager must also exhibit effective leadership qualities. Leadership involves influencing the actions of the employees towards realizing the objectives of the organization (Burns, 1978). Managers should be able to inspire the employees to an elevated ambition and direct their activities in fulfilling the objectives allocated during the planning procedure. The managerial position requires interpersonal skills to ensure that the manager is in close contact with his or her employees so as to coach, assist, and problem solves with them.
Lastly, after the other aspects are in place, the role of a manager is not yet complete, as he or she needs to check continuously that the plans are implemented properly. This is the controlling process. In case the set goals are not met, the manager usually takes appropriate corrective actions to ensure that things go as planned. In conclusion, every manager of a company undertakes these tasks. However, the amount of time taken to fulfill every one of them relies on both the extent of management and the type of the company he or she is representing.
